Gilbert est resté un inconditionnel de la petite reine. On le revoit encore, à la bonne saison, rouler dans les campagnes du Hayt-Pays et du Bavaysis, encourager les jeunes coureurs sur le bord des routes de la région... Un incroyable amoureux du vélo! On se souviendra de son frère, <span style="font-weight: bold;">José</span>, premier vainqueur du "Grand Prix de Fayt-Le-Franc" (1968). Il est né à Quiévrechain (Fr.) le 11/5/1946 et est décédé le 28/8/1969 suite à une chute dans un critérium à Zingem. Un véritable projet éducatif est venu s’y greffer. L’an dernier, la commune de Dour a décidé de mettre à profit cette manifestation de renommée internationale pour initier les élèves de sixième primaire de l'entité aux joies de la bicyclette. Une belle occasion pour rendre les enfants conscients des dangers de la voie publique où ils sont les plus vulnérables.<o:p><br /></o:p>Le « Samyn des écoliers » se déroulera, ainsi, cette année encore, sur un circuit urbain grandeur nature où chaque jeune cycliste muni d’un casque et d’une chasuble fluo pourra réellement prendre conscience que la route demande une attention permanente.
